"Is there such a thing as 'American culture'?

Indeed, there is a thing called ‘American culture”. It is primarily influenced by a multicultural ethos that includes African, Native American, Asian, Polynesian, and Latin American people, and their cultures, making the United States one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Nearly every region around the world has influenced the American culture creating its own cultural characteristics such as music, regional language, clothing, and social habits. American culture started before the 20th century when America was viewed as multicultural country by others.

Over the years, some Americans have lost common sense of identity due to the United States’ large count of diversities and mixed cultures nationwide. The United states has always been a nation of multicultural groups and it remains so today. The large count of diversity in today’s nation is radically changing the nature of the American identity, or the basic American values when it comes to sports, clothing and food.

Nealon and Giroux define multiculturalism as something of a buzzword taking a lot of criticism and containing a lot of hopes. It is criticized by those who think it is a way to separate individuals instead of bringing them together. Multiculturalism has had huge effect on the United States and its growth. According to Historyplex, “it has showed positive aspects, and is still supporting many individuals who are engaged actively in education and business. Although weightage is much more on the positive side, there's some amount of corruption prevailing in America due to multiculturalism.”  It has become important because it has changed the outlook on most certainly everything in today’s world from education to politics, as well as creating equal rights and opportunities. It has also created a world where no one is ignored or regarded as unimportant and setting an example for a better world.

  1. Hi Wajiha,
I enjoyed reading your response 6 about American culture. Although you took a different view than I did, you made exceptional points. There may not be one single culture, however there is multiple within America, and basically this has become what is known today as American culture. I mean we are known as the melting pot. Also, as you stated, we are extremely multicultural and it has substantially impacted our growth. I agree that we have learned many ideas from countries and cultures overseas and without them I think we'd be much different and not as open minded.
