In the political cartoon by Bob Englehart, the author argues that student loans are considered a weight  on the graduate’s back. The cartoons depicts that the student is   not able to get away from student debt, even though he is looking into the future hoping to build and create himself. However, it is blocked by the amount of student loans he owes. Student loans are blocking him from being able to enjoy and create the future he has hoped for because student debt is weighing him down and blocking his vision. The student is arguing to an audience of lenders or a third-party loan servicing company regarding his student debt being this huge amount of money that must be paid back on time with a payment overdue rate enforced. The purpose of the argument is to help people and loan servicing companies to realize that student debt is a weight on a graduate’s back even after graduations. Moreover, it argues to lower college tuition to be more affordable by student without the need of having to take out a student loan to cover college expenses. Many students become buried in debt after years of working towards a degree in the hopes of a good job that will set them up for an affordable life. The argument is an evaluation because it makes a judgment about student loans being harmful to the student, and it shows to be a weight that the student has to carry into a future that he cannot create because he is in debt. Debt is harmful towards a person’s credit because it has a lot of effect in determining a person’s future and setting limits to their opportunities and capabilities. Students loans are the most typical way students utilize to pay off their tuition, but because students loans are funds that graduates sign up for, which also have an interest rate, students end up having a
harder time paying off their debt. The cartoon depicts a huge bag that is titled student loans and a graduate that is giving a speech about his future, but he is being blocked from being seen by his audience, since the debt he is facing is blocking him from seeing his future. Although, the background of the image seems bright as it is filled with sunshine and a promising scenery, the graduate appears to be overwhelmed and blinded by size of the bag. This rhetorical editorial appeals the most toward the audience’s emotions, since it models for them what most graduates face after they graduate. Therefore, the cartoon relies on pathos in delivering the message to the audience because it appeals to their sense of feelings, and leaves them thinking about their own future.
