Response 3

Human Trafficking

The image I chose portrays a visual stereotype of human trafficking of women. This lingering issue is taking place all around the globe where women are forced into sex work. The main reactions that accompany an audience when viewing the image is fear and a sense of insecurity. The demonstrated frightfulness in the victim’s wide-open eyes are imploring the audience to get into action, since her powerless voice is blocked by a man’s hand, which represents the focal point in the image. The foreground is represented by the girl’s face that is centered behind the hand. From the context of the picture, one might conclude that the presented hand is not meant to aid her, but to hurt her. Whereas the background’s coloration is displayed in black; this color is often associated with evilness, power, and strength. This bespeaks the authority of the trafficker over the victim. The image contains a caption that says, “this is not how she imagined her first job.” One can infer from the sentence that the girl presented in the picture is an adolescent who is trying to pursue a job that will set her for the future. This implies that this job doesn’t represent what she was expecting. Typically, the first job we usually pursue is meant to be a stepping stone that prepares you for the rest of your life. It is supposed to be an exciting experience for a teenager as a part of their coming of age process. However, the future of the girl depicted has already been captured by the abuser. We as an audience see her as a victim, which strikes an emotional cord within ourselves by feeling sympathetic toward her. The rhetorical element that this image is mostly associated with is pathos, since the picture is calling the audience whose age group ranges between 15-21, to step up, defend our right, and never allow anyone to set limits for their future.
